Pics of horses and ponies on the net with location
« Thread Started on Oct 12, 2008, 4:18pm »

Apologies if this has been flagged up before
http://www.geograph.org.uk/
This site aims to have a picture in every map square for the whole country
You pop in your postcode or where your horses are kept and hey presto pics of your area appear---click on a pic and pan down the page for exact location
My boys ARE THERE complete with exact location of their grazing field.

The pics are categorised and there are something like 1000 horse pics and 400 of ponies all with exact OS map location

These pics are not necessarily taken by horsy people so mine are classed as 'ponies' one is 16hh

What do you all think--is this a security issue or am I worrying unnecessarily?

I really really would not be comfortable with having my horses photos with pretty much a grid reference to where they are kept, there are enough horses being stolen without giving the thieves a location shopping list.

Is there anyway you could get your photos and details removed?

This is very worrying. I've found my ponies on this site. I am just drafting a complaint to the website owners asking for the picture to be removed. There is a 'contact' option on the site, it would be nice if I had some company in my complaint!

Yes it would worry me but I guess on the other hand, if horses/ponies are being noted ... maybe, a slim chance I know, a couple of stolen horses could end up being found through the same system

As others have already stated not too happy about the security implications and the possibility of a 'steal to order list' if details of horses are posted on there . :(
However on a closer look it appears to be more of a photographers location landmark site than an equestrian directory which would probably appeal to my OH. ;) Unless I am missing something (foggy flu head !)

Thanks to Cuffey though for bringing this to our attention.

Just looks like a photographers website to me and can't see much harm in it, not any more harm than most forums like this anyway, where it can be incredibly easy to pick up information.
