I have just been to our 2 local shops for Barley wine and they don't have it and I need to get on and make my Christmas puddings - can I use anything else? Like more Stout?

Yep, stout is fine.
Once you have cooked them, you can also prick them with a skewer & slowly dribble brandy into the skewer holes ;D

Stout is the best, either Mackeson or Guiness

Oh sounds fab, my Mum always put Mackeson in her puddings and if there was a little bit left we made a mackie shandy, happy memories
