I have owned my mare for 2 months now and only ridden her 3 times, however i have been doing lots of ground work with her including some walks out in hand which improved dramaticly since the first couple of walk outs, she became very relaxed and stopped shouting to her friends. First hack out before any ground work she was very forward going, not stopping at junctions, just wasn't listening at all. second hack dug her heels in wouldn't budge so gave in. third hack dug heels in again so got off and walked her out on a 45 minutes hack again she was back to square one forward going, not listening, neighing to friends but i didn't give in. How can i get her to budge without smacking her with whip? She is 6 yrs and was hacking alone great before i bought her, maybe she needs more time than i can give her? I work her in-hand almost every nite for at least 20 mins, maybe it's me thats a failure I just don't know what to do any more???

Have you tried a wipwop? This creates forward movement without hitting.

Not welsh is she?! We have a similar problem with our new welshy, but it is a combination of a confidence thing and just general stroppyness- which is improving slowly. I had to stop my Mum from doing too much work with him in hand and he will follow you to the end of the world on the ground, but the second you get on board he goes "Think I best just stand here.. very still and not move til I have a leader". The only one thing that will get him to move out of his "Nar.. not moving" is a combination of pulling him off of balance so that he has to move his feet and singing (badly!) very loud.. he almost dies of embarrassment and just goes "Oh ok then.. I'll move.. just please shhhh before someone sees". You will get there, just time and patience. Maybe spend a little more time riding than you do with groundwork so you both become more confident together when out riding?

Not tried a wipwop but did cross my mind.
Yes she welsh c!!
I think your right more ridden work and less ground work. I have only just got a saddle today that fits her so thought i would go for hack until she planted her feet, a lady at yard did lead her and she went but as soon as she let go she planted again. When i kicked her on i felt like she could explode so decided to sit a bit and wait, that didn't work either so lead her out. I will try knocking her off balance and see if that works. Thanks.

Thanks troop When i think back to 1980 when i got my first pony he was a welsh B, he was exactly the same when ridden out, i used to get 5 mins walk then 10 mins planting until i got the hang of him lol.

My welsh D used to be exactly the same. I broke it right down into small steps. Started by taking him out for walks in hand. Then when he was happy and relaxed with that I started getting on and riding him for part of the way, usually on the way home. I gradually got on a bit earlier until I was getting on after the first 50 yards. Now I can ride him out from the yard. It wasn't all plain sailing, he would often plant or go backwards still, but we got there. It took a lot of patience and time. If he planted I had to give him a few seconds to think about it and then ask him gently but firmly forward. If I got after him straightaway he would start going backwards but giving him a little time really helped. Also asking for a slight turn as well as forwards helped to get his legs moving. A whip was a no no, but using a wipwop or my reins as a wipwop did help on occasion.

Ah now that's another problem. Fortunately that's something my lad has always been very good with. He does standing still very well. Is there someone who could walk put with you, not for her to follow but just to walk next to you. Or could someone meet you at your getting on point to help with the mounting? Otherwise it's a case of working on getting her to stand still for mounting, which is something I'd do anyway tbh. Just to add, she hasn't actually been with you for very long so is probably still feeling unsettled and is probably testing the waters a bit with you. My lad took a good 6 months to settle and wasn't properly happy until he'd been with me for about a year. It also took a LONG time to get him happy to go out on a hack by ourselves. At least 2 years! So yes I had to have a lot of patience.

Once again i have been working on her standing and she will happily let me on board whilst on the yard, on hack as soon as i went to get up she started racing forward so got my foot out quick before been dragged, i could get someone to walk out with me. She has so much to learn my little mare but i'm sure we will get there one day...thanks again for replys

She sounds as though she is really worried about being out on her own - are there any hacking buddies you could ask to accompany you? Start with a mini hack and build from there. If you don't have anyone, you will need to build her confidence and ability to cope with the big wide world without another horse for security - leading her out and then long reining so that she learns to do without the security of you at her head.

Decided to ride in paddock tonight now this is where she can see other horses and she planted once again. I knocked her off balance and it worked. She did keep planting but in end realised she was gonna be knocked off balance so got the message. I had a nicely forward going pony...thankyou guys i just hope it stops completely now
