 Zorelle's diary

Just a few action shots of Zorelle arriving. Sorry they're blurred but the light was fading so it was a slow shutter speed.

Thinking about coming off the lorry:

Off the lorry and in full flight:

Where am I?

As you can see from the first one, she's tiny! But you know what they say about small packages. First brief impressions are that she's feisty but not as flighty as I'd expected (which might mean she'll put up more of a fight!). I just went into the field to check her and she put her head up as I came towards her but didn't move off.

I think, from the furious foot stamping, that she's got those dratted flies. Not much I can do until we can handle her, though. I hope they'll decide it's too cold and wet here! She's rubbed her tail but otherwise looks in pretty good shape. Large udder but she doesn't look heavily in foal, so maybe she had one and lost it or something?

Anyway, I'll take some better photos tomorrow but for now will leave her in peace to stuff her face. I think she's missed the grass! Betty, my big girl, can't take her eyes off her. "Who's that eating MY grass!"

Oh best explain we changed her name as liz told me that Orielle in french means ear and as she has a little bit of her ear missing we thought that was a bit mean so we changed it to Zorelle so still the same but nicer. Hopefully will see her soon.

Poor little thing, we couldn't have picked worse weather for her. It's windy, raining, cold, in short miserable. She's tucked herself in behind the hedge, wondering what the hell's happening.

Height wise, I think she's more 1.20m than 1.40m, so somewhere around the 12hh mark (but I'm dreadful at guessing sizes). She's chunky, though, but definitely with a slightly exotic look to her.

So, this morning I've just sat in the field with her, trying to let her know I mean no harm. She just stood and looked at me for a while, then decided I was ok enough to graze. I thought that was great, but then she started coming towards me while grazing, which was completely unexpected. She jumps at everything, not unexpected on a windy day, but still decided she could close our gap. I'll carry on doing that today, I think. If she can see me as not one of the 4 people it took to load her yesterday, I'll be on a better footing.

Talking of feet, they're unsurprisingly dreadful. I've got my trimmer booked in a few weeks anyway but I'll have to keep an eye on them. However, I'm of the view I'd rather get it right with the handling and have long feet for a couple of weeks longer than ideal than go with a farrier I don't know.

Whoops, long thread! When I get going....

its difficult to decide with the feet and stuff, isnt it? I decided to get the handling right first as the only way we could do anything else would be to pen them in terrified as has clearly been done many times before, and sedate them, imo this would reinforce their belief that all humans are evil and put the handling way back.

Exactly, Sarah. I guess I've decided that she's come this far in life without a farrier, a couple more weeks won't hurt. Given her experiences of humans so far include at least 3 lots of transport, a microchip needle, a tag in her ear (you can just see it above her forelock on that last photo), I think we can wait for feet, vaccinations, worming, etc. At last, she's come to humans who want to earn her trust, I can't break it before I start, can I?
