Flynn's fieldmate Toby wasn't Freezemarked when he came to his present owners, but he was microchipped. His owners have been told that the vet has to do the tracing though - is that true?
It was picked up in his vetting before they purchased him - would the vet have also checked to see whether he was stolen as well?
He was supposed to have come over from Ireland if that makes any difference to rules and regs.
Thanks Louise

Doesn't have to be a vet Louise, police, slaughterers, ports and some HW people have scanners. However, don't know if all scanners can pick up all chips, or how you trace the owner if you do find one. Hopefully someone will enlighten me.

Hi Louise, I traced my mare using her microchip after she was scanned by the vet who told me it was a Dutch microchip so I knew where to start at least. I'm not saying I found it easy though! As my horses microchip originated in Holland and it was a case of looking for all the possible places that microchip number could have been registered, the KWPN searched for me for instance. Eventually after making lots of internet searches and phone calls I traced her back to the Hackney Studbook. This was a bit of a surprise as I thought she was a Gelderlander! I now have a full pedigree for her and a Dutch Passport which includes all her breeding so it was well worth the effort for me.
I would have thought the vet would be able to advise how to trace the microchip if not have access to the ownership details or database that it is registered with upon scanning the chip, my vet was only able to tell me that my girls was Dutch though. If not I think DEFRA should be able to advise how to trace a UK microchip number or maybe contact organisations such as Farmkey who also microchip I believe, they may be able to point you in the right direction.
I did come across a couple of pet & horse ID sites when I was looking where you could just put in the microchip number and search on it, I think I rang one in the end and they put me in touch with their Dutch Office who pointed me in several possible directions until I struck it lucky. I can't find them on google now though!
Good luck, hopefully if it's a UK microchip it will be a lot easier!

Many thanks for that Heather - I find it a bit strange that he was microchipped and yet there was no paperwork with him - nor was he Freezemarked, the new owners got him done. I guess it might depend on which part of Ireland he came from - we don't know.

It's so frustrating isn't it Louise, I really think there should be a central European database that all microchips are registered with, it would surely help with theft and recovery etc.

You would think that wouldn't you - there doesn't seem to be a lot of info about it? Many thanks for your help anyway:-)
