I am looking at buying a pagony simply because it is the cheapest sweet itch rug I can find.
I know some of you have solva's and boetts but does anyone have the Pagony? how is the sizing did it come up big or small in your opinion? My welsh D is in a 6' t/o or fly rug to accomodate his chest but they are slightly deep in length and his current fly rug is neat on his neck so I am a bit worried about sizing it correctly.
Also, the reason I need to replace his current fly rug is that he is sweating in it on hot days, where the lining is. Has anyone had this with a pagony?
sorry tp be a rug bore, but these sweet itch rugs are so expensive and having bought on fly rug this year I am being a bit super-careful!

I had a Pagony a couple of years ago and then they did come up small. I did find that it didn't last as well as a boett though. Like the boett, it is much harder to get on and off than a regular full neck fly rug - it doesn't fasten under the neck and across the chest, so a bit like a big heavy cumbersome polo neck jumper to pass over the head. As for sweating, it's very similar fabric to the boett and although it does seem as though it should be hot to wear, it doesn't seem to make them sweat. That said, mine don't sweat in a regular fly rug, so I don't know whether it is better or worse, sorry.

hhhmmm, I am so tempted to get a cheap fly rug of ebay without any lining. his sweet itch is well controlled in his reg fly rug. I have him in last years today which is too small on the neck and probably quite ineffective but I thought it would confirm / refute my suspicions that its the lining causing the sweating. Of course now it is forecast to rain... and I can't get back up there until later! He is a vey good boy to rug etc so I think he'd be okay to have it on and off. Thanks for your help Jill, C x

I ordered a Pagony for Khan in a 5'6", which is his normal rug size but it was too tight around the seam that runs round his withers/chest. It was also very neat as far as length goes. So I changed it for a 5'9" but that was much the same, better length but still too tight around neck. Back to the drawing board for him. Rafferty has a De Meulenkamp, but I have had to alter the length by taking in a seam around the middle and it is a bit baggy on his back legs. Having said that, it works very well and seems to be surviving his best attempts to remove/destroy it so far. I got a Snuggy Hoods sweet itch hood for him and that is also standing up well to general thuggery. Anyone got a Snuggy Hoods sweet itch rug? How do they come up for size and are they a bit warm?

I have one and it's doing it's fourth year now to keep the horrendous Irish midges, but they are not sold as a dedicated SI rug as far as I know. I have replaced a strap here and there with my brilliant local tack guy, but I really like the rug. It looks like new when put through the washer. You do have to put it over the head, but it's silky and once you get the horse used to it (couple of goes) there's no issue even with my head-shy Flynn. I would always buy these and any SI type rug a size bigger. Here's my previous horse in the full summer gear including the Pagony.

thanks for that feedback kanga. Their website suggests it for "mild sweet itch suffers", my boy probably falls into that category, he can and will rub if bitten a lot but you'd never know to look at him now in a regular fly rug. I am pleased. the sizing thing worries me, if I go up a size, thats a 6'3, I can't get a 6'3' for a 14.2 pony!!! Have now been mulling over the option of getting a 6' fly rug and a size up in detachable neck, if thats possible. Thick a proper look round our local tack shop tommorrow would help me decide for sure. Pic is ace, he's a handsome boy isn't he C x

I would say look for the belly piece whatever you get, as it really keeps the flies and midges off their tender spots. Thanks Cookie. He's with a new owner a year now eventing and hunting. He was itchy but not sweet itchy. We have dire insects here as it's a warm river valley, so everyone's in a rug. He is 15.1 in a 6'3" I think.
