Hi Beanymare...
Yes his napping is a response to pain, as is the spooking! His behaviour is as near to perfect as you can get during the summer months (ulcer free) and then in winter the ulcers come and the behaviour deteriorates...from observation it seems that as he gets anxious (he is a natural worrier) the stomach churns (as with most humans when nerves are involved!) and without ulcers there's no problem, with ulcers it causes immense pain and then he panics, not understanding the pain, or the link to what's worrying him.
So far once the ulcers were gone, the behaviour returned, but it seems this last bout was the final straw and I'm noww left with a horse who is permanently worrying about everything because worry=pain...but the result is that he's always on edge and very spooky.
The napping is becoming habitual but was a result of trying to shut down to the pain (I can tell the difference as there is no actual 'reaction' to my leg/aids now...just a bad habit that makes him always nap first, think/try later...previously he's always been a tryer.
It's very sad to see as he's so lovely.
I'm sorry you've had an ulcer diagnosis...I hope you can manage the condition successfully...it is a kinefield and I've become OCD over the last few months!
(sorry for hijacking the thread!)

I have a rearer he is now 16 and still does it, nothing stops him, he goes right up and can balance for ages, never gone over, it is his form of objection. Dont know if he would be much use to you.
He is either in Suffolk if competing or Cambs/Norfolk borders if with me.

I have a 3 year old mare that is currently rearing, think it might be her poll though, once sorted if she still nappy and rearing you can use her.
