For some while now, Gordo's ringbone leg has been difficult to pick up although for the farrier, never an issue! Sometimes, when he does lift it, he may put it down on his toe tip and then the joint collapses forward which is obviously not meant to do!! Last time, he was sore afterwards but gave him a bute and he walked it off but does anyone else have any experience of this?

Had a horse that did this on a rear leg, it was due to a ligament that slipped (much like a fixed patella) that just allowed the horses joint to move incorrectly. He was in his late teens when it started, had a couple of injections to help it (sorry cant remember what they were), plus he had some OCD in the joint.
As my vet said, unfortunately I cant make the young, I can just help them cope. He coped for quiet a few more years with it, till I lost touch with his owner.
Not sure how old Gordo is but hope you can get it sorted.

Thanks Toby, Gordo is 24 so would add up. I will book him in for his yearly MOT and discuss (not that I think he will pick foot up, only farrier seems to have permission!!)

Bless him he is a good age, if I remember correctly he is a big lad. We have one at home like that except he will pick his feet up for anyone apart from our lovely farrier.

I'm sure its just me he does it to but need to get those feet clean. First time I got 'it' up today for weeks, fortunately all was clean and well due to good weather. Smothered in RHP Soul Cleanse just to make sure!!

Is it just one leg? What breed is he? Some forms of DSLD, degenerative suspensory ligament disease, can make it tip forward rather than sit on the floor.
Saying that my mares legs are perfectly healthy and shes being a pig to pick them up for me and me only grr!

If he s resting it a lot could his tendon/ligaments be tightening up or shortening making putting it back down more difficult? Is his foot changing shape at all like a bit of a club shape?

no no, foot looks as good as ever but he just doesn't want to pick it up but then it could be he doesn't want to transfer his weight to the other foot perhaps? As I said, farrier doesn't have any resistance at all so could be playing me up but its the going over that i hate, makes me feel ill to see it.

Kate, we have had great success with arthritic conditions with Premierflex with Devils Claw. Debbie my online shop manager's 22 yr old homebred gelding developed big arthritic lumps around his knees and he could barely lie down and get up never mind be ridden. He is now back in work hacking out regularly and although the lumps are still there, he is sound as a bell and gets up and down really easily! My old horses too are on it, my Arabian at 25 with a big arthritic lump on the top of his forearm was on a dose of bute a day, sometimes two. Now he is on half a dose a day- he is long retired btw- and I reckon we can cut it out altogether very shortly. I really find this supplement the best of any!
