Hi All,
Has anyone heard of Myoglobinuria or had first hand experience of it?
My beautiful 2yr old Warmblood X, Ben, had to be put to sleep recently because of this disease and it truely is a dreadful thing to witness
Personally I had never heard of Myoglobinuria and neither had my horsey friends. I have done some research on the net but can't find a great deal about it - what I do know is that its a disease that affects the muscle, a bit like Azotoria (sp??) but it affects horses kept at grass in little or no work at all. The causes are pretty varied, from heart conditions, to worms, to snake bites, to adverse weather conditions. The upsetting thing is that I can't pinpoint any reason why Ben suffered from it, and I wondered if anyone on the IH board has any other experiences of it.....
The only thing I am suspicious of is his breeding...I only had Ben for 4 months but in that time got to know him pretty well. I bought him as a bit of a rescue mission if Im honest, he wasn't mistreated badly, but his owners at the time just weren't as knowledgable about horses as an owner should be. On his passport there is no recorded parentage, even though he was bred at a proper stud. All it says about his breeding is Warmblood X. Ben was as soft as they come, the most gentle youngster I have ever worked with, he acted 35 when he was only 2. When I first got him I thought he would come into his own if he was given the freedom to do so, but in the short time I had him, he remained very quiet and hardly spooked or shied when out for walks in hand round the country lanes with me. My suspicions are that maybe he was inbred and never quite 'right' in the first place? this could be a reason why he developed Myoglobinuria, or it may just be me being a bit upset about the whole thing and clutching at straws.
Any info would be really appreciated.
Many thanks.
